Cosplayers steal show at Really Cool Comic Con

Flint, MI – The multiverse shattered.

When it happened, Spider-People were thrown out of the Spider-Verse and into the Dort Financial Center for Really Cool Comic Con on Saturday, Aug. 5.

One of the cosplayers was Raymond Crawford from West Bloomfield, who dressed as Miles Morales after loving the second film in the franchise, “Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse,” which released in June.

“The second movie was even better,” Crawford said. “I wanted to cosplay this outfit because I liked the outfit he had… I liked his suit, and I liked his shoes.”

Staying true to character, Crawford wore a pair of Jordan One Chicagos, the red, white and black colorway that Miles is seen wearing in the movies.

Crawford was there with his father, Ray.

“I supply the shoes,” Ray Crawford said.

Raymond Crawford was there to compete in the Super Smash Bros Ultimate tournament.

Once ranked eighth in the state, Crawford had a strong belief he could win, but he wasn’t in typical playing form.

On his right hand, tucked away in Miles Morales’ jacket, was a cast.

“I broke my thumb during football,” Crawford said. “I’ve been transitioning to learn how to play without my thumb… It’s been going pretty good.”

Really Cool Comic Con offered multiple different gaming tournaments, including Mortal Kombat that was streamed onto the jumbotron, typically reserved for the Flint Firebirds.

Attendees had the opportunity to visit hundreds of vendor booths, meet authors, artists, anime voice actors and WWE Hall of Famers Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Sgt. Slaughter.

Cosplayers walked around and snapped photos with one another, card collectors traded Pokemon and Magic cards and comic book collectors looked for their holy grails.

It wasn’t just Spider-People that ended up a the Dort Financial Center. It was Wonder Woman and Frog Thor, a sad Ronald McDonald, a group of Ash Ketchums and so much more.

“I go for the costumes, seeing other people’s costumes, getting compliments and making people’s days,” Jake O’Neil, 18, said, “That’s the best thing about going to Comic Con, that’s what makes it awesome.”

Saturday’s events ended with a cosplay contest, which brought out many competitive and creative designers who can spend months at a time on one of their outfits.

O’Neil showed up with his friends in a set of Mario costumes but entered and placed in the cosplay competition wearing Five Nights at Freddy’s costumes that he hand made.

“It took me one trimester to make all four of the masks, then I took a long break,” O’Neil said. “I got caught back up on the rest of the costumes this last spring and summer.”

Really Cool Comic Con returned on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
