Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Costumes, Ranked

With the new reveal of Hugh Jackman's most comics-accurate Wolverine suit yet, here's a ranking of all of his part costumes in live-action.

Over the last 23 years, Hugh Jackman has been the one and only Wolverine in live-action, having worn a few different costumes and suits over the years. While some past and future appearances are more comic-accurate than others, there's no denying that the character underneath is quite entertaining thanks to Jackman's performance as one of Marvel's most popular X-Men. With an imminent MCU debt on the horizon, it's fun to look back and rank Wolverine's best costumes throughout Fox's X-Men franchise.

Dating back to 2000's X-Men which marked Jackman's first appearance playing Wolverine, the mutant hero has had quite the career with the X-Men and beyond, culminating in his death as seen in 2017's Logan. However, it seems as though Wolverine's death won't be keeping Jackman from starring alongside Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson in Deadpool 3 set to release in 2024 (most likely due to the multiverse). At any rate, here are Wolverine's best live-action costumes ranked (including some honorable mentions).

As seen in 2013's The Wolverine which saw Logan traveling to Japan in the wake of the X-Men trilogy, an alternate ending saw Logan being offered a yellow and brown variant of his classic costume from the original Marvel comics (first appearing in 1963's Uncanny X-Men #139), complete with the iconic black cowl. However, the scene was not in the official cut of the movie itself nor did Logan ever wear the suit in future appearances. That being said, the Wolverine costume tease alone was very exciting granting the suit an honorable mention.

In the same vein, the X-Men trilogy and Wolverine's first solo film X-Men: Origins saw Logan wearing a brown leather jacket with muted yellow accents, the same colors as the aforementioned costume from the comics. However, the jacket itself is less of an official costume and more simple civilian clothes. It is a nice nod to the source material all the same.

Worn across all three films in the original X-Men trilogy, Professor Xavier's team sported black leather suits. This included Wolverine who reluctantly joins their ranks in the first film, receiving his own black suit with yellow lining. The decision to wear black leather as opposed to the X-Men's more colorful costumes from the comics was made by director Bryan Singer who was concerned that audiences wouldn't take the movie seriously. As such, the costumes seen in the X-Men certainly set the tone for the rest of the X-Men franchise going forward with comics-accurate costumes only ever being teased (though they did start to come through near the franchise's end).

It's quite remarkable that Wolverine and his fellow X-Men essentially wore the same suits across all three films with little variation. In the current superhero movie era, costumes are constantly changing almost every time a hero has a new appearance in a sequel or crossover as new styles help increase a movie's marketability and merchandising. Having the same suit across an entire trilogy in the present is quite rare and nearly unheard of.

2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past saw Wolverine wearing a more tactical suit compared to the black leather of the 2000s. While it was a marked improvement, the suit still carried darker tones. Likewise, much of the muted yellow and blue accents were covered up by black armor and padding. Furthermore, the suit was hardly worn by Logan whose mind was sent back into the past to change the dark timeline the X-Men found themselves in. As such, Wolverine's Days of Future Past suit is the embodiment of "good but not great" while also being massively underutilized in the crossover film connecting the franchise's old and new casts.

Appearing briefly in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse set in the 1980s, Logan was still a part of the Weapon X program when the younger and newly cast versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler broke into William Stryker's facility to save their fellow classmates who'd been kidnapped. However, they also found a feral Logan in his holding cell. Releasing Wolverine who caused a brutally violent distraction for the young X-Men, Jean ultimately set him free after helping restore a part of his mind which ended his berserker rage as Stryker's Weapon X.

Having all sorts of devices and monitors attached to his head and body, this version of Wolverine is meant to resemble his design in the original Weapon X storyline from the early 90s. The key story arc depicted Logan's first explorations into his past and the experimentation that was done to him such as the virtually indestructible adamantium covering his skeleton and bone claws. As such, the rare and exciting comic accuracy for this Wolverine appearance sees this Weapon X costume ranking high, a stand-out appearance despite being a glorified cameo for Hugh Jackman.

Regardless of the suits and costumes Hugh Jackman's Wolverine has and hasn't worn over the course of the X-Men franchise, his best costume is still yet to come. Revealed in new set photos and an official image released by Marvel Studios, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine appearance in Deadpool 3 will see Logan finally wearing his most classic yellow and blue costume from the original comics. The suit has already received very high praise as it's something several fans have wanted for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine for over two decades, especially after the tease in 2013's The Wolverine with its alternate ending.

While it's unknown if Wolverine will also be wearing the accompanying black mask/cowl over his head, the new suit is quite accurate with the blue gloves and silver openings for his claws, right down to the red "X" belt buckle. The main difference is that the suit has sleeves compared to the sleeveless version seen on the page. However, that's a very minor change that does help modernize the new suit somewhat along with the black detailing.

It's very exciting to see Hugh Jackman's Wolverine standing next to Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool whose own red costume is just as impressive. Both suits together have a very high level of comics-accuracy which should be a lot of fun as the duo explores their rivalry and partnership in the MCU's Deadpool 3. Regardless, the yellow and blue suit is easily the best live-action costume Wolverine has ever had.
